The 2018 Rapid Planning Stakeholder Conference Kigali/Rwanda, 24 October 2018
With coordination provided by UN Habitat, the Rapid Planning project supports the efforts of the City of Kigali, the Rwandan Ministry of Infrastructure and other stakeholders to enhance the sustainability and affordability of supply and disposal infrastructure. Our efforts are funded by the German Ministry of Education and research (BMBF). At the 2018 Kigali Stakeholder Conference results of our activities and plans for the last year of our project were presented.
The mayor of the City of Kigali, Hon. Marie Chantal RWAKAZINA opened the conference. She shared her vision of a science-based development of infrastructure development of Kigali and expressed her hope of more usable outputs of the Rapid Planning project for the City of Kigali.
What the Rapid Planning project did in Kigali thus far….
Maps
- High-resolution GIS maps of urban structure types in Kigali with the possibility of periodic change detection of urban development (presented at a workshop in Kigali in July 2018)
- Maps of supply and disposal infrastructure in Kigali, urban material and energy flows
Databases
- A socio-economic household survey, a database of household consumption/generation patterns for energy, water, waste water and food based on building typology
- consumption/generation patterns for energy, water, waste water and food in public sector, industry and commerce
Practical applications
- A case study of decentral greywater treatment in Agatare cell (mapping of greywater flows, water treatment options, water quality after discharge)
- Testing erosion control with Vetiver grass, improving resilient wetland farming, increasing the yields of urban agriculture
- A building material calculator that allows to compare environmental impacts of typical building materials in Rwanda (cement, bricks, straw panels, etc.) in support of a Rwanda Green Building standard
Outreach and training
- A series of workshops (e.g. with City of Kigali, Nyarugenge District, University of Rwanda, Rwanda Association of Manufacturers, Rwanda Housing Authority)
- Publications in journals, presentation on scientific conferences
- Joint training of professionals from Kigali, Da Nang, Assiut and Frankfurt
- The Rapid Planning Simulator: a support tool for integrated modelling and planning of supply and disposal structures
