Future scenarios for the city of Kigali – Rapid Planning/TU Berlin organised the first Trans-sectoral Scenario Workshop in Kigali/Rwanda
Developing scenarios for future urban development in the rapidly growing capital of Rwanda in East Africa was the focus of the trans-sectoral scenario workshop organized by TU Berlin in the context of the BMBF-funded research project "Rapid Planning", held October 25 2018 in Kigali.
Rapid Planning/TU Berlin succeeded in gathering diverse participants from the water, wastewater, energy, waste and urban agriculture sectors. Local representatives from city administration, utilities, private sector companies, ministerial agencies and the Ministry of Infrastructure of Rwanda highlighted current and potential future developments in lively group discussions.
Defining trans-sectoral scenarios of potential future urban developments and integrated infrastructure planning in Kigali and Nyarugenge District formed the heart of the workshop. Visualizing proposed scenario options enabled participants to gain a deeper understanding of the Rapid Planning scenario approach and what the implications in implementing integrating infrastructure planning. It also served to tailor scenarios to specific local contexts. The discussion results are feeding into the setup of the "Rapid Planning" simulator developed by ifak, supporting strategic trans-sectoral planning of integrated urban infrastructure systems.
