Goals of the task
This task focuses on the collection of specific data for the major industry in the case cities. The obtained data for waste and with restrictions also for water, wastewater and energy consumption will be compared to a method based on employee-specific amounts of industrial wastes with respect to different industrial sectors (developed and provided within Task 5.3 by AT-Verband). This method allows a rapid estimation of sector specific values and is to be calibrated with data gathered by industry surveys.
Work done to achieve the goals
In a first step, during the last two years, IUWA gathered all available information about the industrial sector in Kigali and Da Nang from reports, statistical yearbooks and further sources and analysed them. In a second step, surveys of industrial companies in the case cities Kigali and Da Nang were planned. As a tool for the surveys, a questionnaire was developed in close cooperation with AT-Verband and further RP partners as experts for the different sectors. The questionnaire consists of two independent parts, which can be used also separately. A first battery of brief questions for collecting basic data, such as information on the company itself and first general information on products, raw materials, operating materials like water, energy carriers and waste. The second part is a list of more detailed questions covering the main topics of energy and water consumption as well as waste and wastewater generation in regard to qualities and quantities. Furthermore questions related to different certifications and constraints or problems were queried.
In Kigali and Da Nang, the industrial surveys have already been carried out. Local project partners supported the on-site activities regarding organisation, translation or local knowledge. In Assiut, the survey could not be started yet due to the unstable political situation in this region.
The investigation targeted at companies belonging to the manufacturing sector with more than 100 employees. About 30 companies of this size exist in Kigali. Together with the local interviewer team, IUWA planned and conducted the survey. For this purpose, each company to be investigated was visited, the project was introduced to the management, and the questionnaire was discussed and filled in as far as possible. The more detailed part of the questionnaire could be filled in during a longer period of time and handed over to the interviewer after several days. In a few cases, a guided tour of the industrial site was also organised.
In Da Nang, large manufacturing companies are located mainly within the industrial parks (IP). Accompanied by the head of the Environmental Office of Da Nang Industrial and Export Processing Zones Authority, all industrial parks in Da Nang and several companies located in these parks were visited. Finally in total, 50 companies with more than 100 employees from different industries were selected for further investigation. The statistical yearbook of Da Nang provides detailed data on the industry sector. The developed questionnaire, which was previously used for sector specific data gathering on industry level in Kigali, was discussed with local partners in Da Nang and finally adapted to the relevant context and translated into Vietnamese.
Results so far
The data and information collected and analysed derived from reports and statistical yearbooks represent a good data basis for the industry sector. Multi-year time series could be compiled for different industries in Da Nang and are available for further evaluations. For every case city, an according report has been prepared. Two surveys – one in Kigali one in Da Nang – were carried out in order to collect the needed sector specific data on the industrial level. As a further outcome, the developed survey method with the comprehensive questionnaire is available for the case cities as an easy to use tool for closing data gaps related to disposal and supply issues in industrial companies. The industrial survey in Kigali delivered 28 datasets from large enterprises belonging to different fields of industry. The respective survey in Da Nang delivered about 50 datasets from eleven different fields of industry in total. All data are provided in Excel format and related information in English language. The gathered data and information is available for the RP partners and the case cities. Exemplary basic data for Da Nang are shown in Tab. 12. The data quality can generally be described as good. Nonetheless, some data and information for example on the amount of hazardous waste must be further checked. In particular the indicated ratio between waste and hazardous waste is much too small compared to German statistical data on industrial waste. First datasets, espicially with regard to the water sector, were provided for application and assessment to our project partner Ostfalia. In this case the specific water data serve as input data for modelling the local drinking water and wastewater system in Da Nang. The comparison and callibration of the data resulting from the on-site surveys with the data resulting from the method based on employee-specific amounts of industrial wastes with respect to different industrial sectors will be made soon in 2017. The figures in Tab. 12 represent a part of the database, available for further use in WP4 and WP5.

The gathered specific data and information on industry level is compiled in the deliverable D-3.2 “Sector related datasets on consumption and generation for main industries in the case cities”.
